Indentured Servants

Today, about three-fourths of our population of English Colonists served a term of servitude. It's because most people who wanted to go to the New World couldn't afford to, so someone would pay for that person's trip. In order to pay off their dept, these people become slaves for a number of years. We call these people indentured servants.

Sadly, half of them died before their service was completed, one quarter remained poor afterward, and the other quarter achieved a degree of prosperity. After someone's debt is repayed they most likely work for the same person in order to get enouph money to buy their own land.
